Understanding of mechanotransduction within the cutaneous sensory system is limited by the complex nature of the skin matrix in which the receptors are embedded. At least one of these receptor types, the Pacinian corpuscle, is more easily accessible in cat mesenteric tissue and as such has become prototypical for describing many peripheral physiological processes probably common to the other skin mechanoreceptors.
