Abstract The i.r. spectra of 1,3,4,6-heptatetraene (divinylallene) have been obtained in the vapour phase and in the crystalline state at − 175°C. Raman spectra of the liquid were recorded. We have interpreted the spectra in terms of C 2 symmetry and no evidence was found for the existence of additional conformers. A tentative assignment of the vibrational fundamentals is presented, checked by a normal coordinate analysis.
