}BACKGROUND
Various methods for the selection of viable sperm from among immotile testicular spermatozoa for use in ICSI have been described in non-randomized studies. We have conducted a randomized controlled study to compare the use of the modified hypo-osmotic swelling (HOS) test (50% culture medium + 50% Milli-Q grade water) with that of sperm selection on the basis of their morphology alone.
METHODS
A total of 79 couples with immotile testicular spermatozoa treated with ICSI were randomly…

Addition of pentoxifylline and 2-deoxyadenosine to the sperm prepared by the two-layer Percoll gradient method can almost equally enhance the sperm membrane integrity and may be beneficial to add these compounds to sperm preparation for use in assisted reproduction.

The latest techniques for the preparation and selection of human spermatozoa are discussed focusing on those proven to improve one or several of the following parameters: sperm genetic integrity, fertilization capacity, embryo production, and in vitro survival, as well as pregnancy and delivery rates following in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).

The fertilization rate with immotile, but vital spermatozoa and the use of polarization microscopy can enhance the FR of TESE‐ICSI, which clearly benefits from laser selection and is a non‐hazardous and safe method for the selection of viable but immotiles sperm.
