Trace metals incorporated in the calcium carbonate of foraminiferal shells are becoming increasingly popular for the reconstruction of past environments. Past sea water temperature, carbonate chemistry, nutrient levels and possibly salinity are all reflected by differences in trace metals to calcium ratios.
