The use of aluminum phosphide for the fumigation of grain stored in bulk has been an established method in Germany for over twenty years. The method depends on the fact that this substance readily decomposes in the presence of water vapor to yield gaseous hydrogen phosphide (phosphine) which is highly toxic to insects.
