The socket of a prosthesis is a tightly closed container. Sweating inside the socket is annoying and may also irritate the skin over the stump or lead to local infection such as folliculitis. The most effective method of preventing sweating is by the use of astringent agents. Formaldehyde is a very strong astringent but is not pleasant to use and may cause skin irritation and systemic reactions. Methenamine, in water or when applied to the skin, decomposes to generate formaldhyde in small… Expand
Prevalence of heat and perspiration discomfort inside prostheses: literature review.
TLDR
More attention must be paid by researchers, clinicians, and manufacturers of prosthetic components to thermal-related biomechanics of soft tissues, proper fabrication technique, material selection, and introduction of efficient thermoregulatory systems. Expand
USING PERFORATED LINERS TO COMBAT THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF EXCESSIVE SWEATING IN LOWER LIMB PROSTHESIS USERS
TLDR
The observed effects on perceived sweat reduction, residual skin health, pain levels and patient limitation suggest that perforated liners are highly beneficial to patients within the prosthetic field. Expand
Botulinum Toxin Type B in the Treatment of Residual Limb Hyperhidrosis for Lower Limb Amputees: A Pilot Study
TLDR
Low-dose BTX-B significantly reduced sweating of the residual limb, thereby improving the use of the artificial limb, steadiness of gait, and quality-of-life. Expand
Incidence, severity, and impact of hyperhidrosis in people with lower-limb amputation.
TLDR
There was a significant association between sweating and interference with prosthetic fit and function and a cross-sectional survey of patients at two amputee clinics was performed to provide guidance for future interventions and treatment options. Expand
Skin problems of the stump in lower-limb amputees: 2. Influence on functioning in daily life.
TLDR
This study confirms the influence of skin problems on functioning in daily life in lower-limb amputees with stump skin problems had a negative influence on ability to perform household tasks, prosthesis use, social functioning, and participation in sports. Expand
Skin problems in lower limb amputees: A systematic review
TLDR
It is found that skin problems of the stump in lower limb amputees are relative common in daily rehabilitation practice, possibly impeding prosthetic use and may have great impact in daily life. Expand

Annual Review of Cosmetic Ingredient Safety Assessments: 2007-2010
TLDR
This Annual Review of Cosmetic Ingredient Safety Assessments updates and affirms the findings of the CIR Expert Panel’s assessment of almost 30 compounds used in cosmetic ingredients and summarizes new findings from epidemiology studies of hair dyes. Expand
Individualizing goals for users of externally powered partial hand prostheses.
TLDR
The tasks identified as both difficult and important to individuals with partial hand loss are described and recommendations are provided regarding matching users' individualized goals with considerations in prosthetic design, functional training, programming, and adaptive equipment. Expand
