We use the extended Press-Schechter formalism to investigate the rate at which cold dark matter haloes accrete mass. We discuss the shortcomings of previous methods that have been used to compute the mass accretion histories of dark matter haloes, and present an improved method based on the N-branch merger tree algorithm of Somerville & Kolatt. We show that this method no longer suffers from inconsistencies in halo formation times, and compare its predictions with high-resolution N-body…

The cosmological history of accretion onto dark halos and supermassive black holes
Aims. We investigate the cosmological growth of dark halos and follow the consequences of coeval growth for the accretion history of associated supermassive black holes. Methods. The Press-Schechter
The mass profile and accretion history of cold dark matter haloes
We use the Millennium Simulation series to investigate the relation between the accretion history and mass profile of cold dark matter (CDM) haloes. We find that the mean inner density within the
Mass accretion rates and histories of dark matter haloes
We use the extensive catalogue of dark matter haloes from the Millennium Simulation to investigate the statistics of the mass accretion histories (MAHs) and accretion rates of ∼500 000 haloes from
The dynamical state of dark matter haloes in cosmological simulations – I. Correlations with mass assembly history
Using a statistical sample of dark matter haloes drawn from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations of the cold dark matter (CDM) model, we quantify the impact of a simulated halo’s mass accretion
A large amount of observations have constrained cosmological parameters and the initial density fluctuation spectrum to a very high accuracy. However, cosmological parameters change with time and the
The accretion history of dark matter haloes - III. A physical model for the concentration-mass relation
We present a semi-analytic, physically motivated model for dark matter halo concentration as a function of halo mass and redshift. The semi-analytic model is intimately based on hierarchical
The accretion history of dark matter haloes - I. The physical origin of the universal function
Understanding the universal accretion history of dark matter halos is the first step towards determining the origin of their structure. We use the extended Press-Schechter formalism to derive the
Coming of age in the dark sector: how dark matter haloes grow their gravitational potential wells
We present a detailed study of how dark matter haloes assemble their mass and grow their (central) potential well. We characterize these via their mass accretion histories (MAHs) and potential well
Universal merger histories of dark‐matter haloes
We study merger histories of dark-matter haloes in a suite of N-body simulations that span different cosmological models. The simulated cases include the up-to-date Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy
The statistical properties of Λ cold dark matter halo formation
We present a comparison of the statistical properties of dark matter halo merger trees extracted from the Millennium Simulation with Extended Press–Schechter (EPS) formalism and the related galform

The mass function of dark matter haloes
We combine data from a number of N-body simulations to predict the abundance of dark haloes in cold dark matter (CDM) universes over more than four orders of magnitude in mass. A comparison of
Evaluating approximations for halo merging histories
We study the merging history of dark matter haloes in N-body simulations and semi-analytical ‘merger trees’ based on the extended Press–Schechter (EPS) formalism. The main focus of our study is the
Mergers and bias in a cold dark matter cosmology
A dissipative N-body code is used to follow the evolution of a cold dark matter spectrum in an Omega = 1, h = 0.5 background. The star and galaxy formation in boxes of three different sizes is shown,
We study the merging history of dark matter haloes that end up in rich clusters, using N-body simulations of a scale-free universe. We compare the predictions of the extended Press &38; Schechter
Mass growth and density profiles of dark matter haloes in hierarchical clustering
We develop a model for the growth of dark matter haloes and use it to study their evolved density profiles. In this model, haloes are spherical and form by quiescent accretion of matter in clumps,
Cold dark matter. 1: The Formation of dark halos
We use numerical simulations of critically closed cold dark matter (CDM) models to study the effects of numerical resolution on observable quantities. We study simulations with up to 256(exp 3)
A Universal Density Profile from Hierarchical Clustering
We use high-resolution N-body simulations to study the equilibrium density profiles of dark matter halos in hierarchically clustering universes. We find that all such profiles have the same shape,
Merger rates in hierarchical models of galaxy formation
We present an analytical description of the merging of virialized haloes which is applicable to any hierarchical model in which structure grows via gravitational instability. The formulae are an
Evaluating Semi-Analytic Halo Merging Histories
We evaluate the accuracy of semi-analytic merger-trees by comparing them with the merging histories of dark-matter halos in N-body simulations, focusing on the joint distribution of the number of
Properties of galaxy clusters: mass and correlation functions
We analyse parallel N-body simulations of three Cold Dark Matter (CDM) universes to study the abundance and clustering of galaxy clusters. The simulation boxes are 500h 1 Mpc on a side and cover a
