There are three kinds of ingrowing toenail in infancy: 1) Congenital hypertrophic lip of the hallux; 2) distal embedding with normally directed nail; 3) congenital malalignment of the big toenail. The management of each type will be discussed. Surgical procedures should never be used in the first group, they are generally unnecessary in the second, but may be recommended, under certain circumstances, in the third.
