The properties of active and repressed 5S rna genes in somatic cell chromatin from Xenopus laevis cultured cells were studied by transcription in vitro. The somatic 5S RNA genes, which are active in vivo, are packaged in chromatin as active stable transcription complexes lacking only RNA polymerase III for transcription activity.
