During the past decade, possible advancement in timing of puberty has been reported in the United States. In addition, early pubertal development and an increased incidence of sexual precocity have been noticed in children, primarily girls, migrating for foreign adoption in several Western European countries. These observations are raising the issues of current differences and secular trends in timing of puberty in relation to ethnic, geographical, and socioeconomic background. None of these…

Recent Secular Trends in Pubertal Timing: Implications for Evaluation and Diagnosis of Precocious Puberty

TLDR
Evidence suggests that age at the gonadotropin and sex steroid surges have not changed, and it looks as if an increasing proportion of contemporary early pubertal girls may experience isolated gonadotropic-independent thelarche rather than central PP, which may not be discernible on Pubertal examination alone.

Assessment and mechanism of variations in pubertal timing in internationally adopted children: a developmental hypothesis

During the past decades, children migrating for international adoption have increased in number. creating an original condition of dramatic environmental change during development. In several

Normal female puberty in a developmental perspective.

TLDR
In this review, the semiology and pathophysiology of puberty are discussed in a lifelong developmental perspective and can be apparently opposing since early maturation follows fetal malnourishment and postnatal overfeeding.

Diagnosis of Precocious Puberty in Girls

TLDR
The aim of this review was to examine the diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) taking in account clinical practice and international literature.

[Individual and environmental conditions influencing puberty in girls].

TLDR
On analysis of professional literature, no alarming advancement in timing of puberty in Polish girls was ascertained and it is necessary to continuously monitor this occurrence, with special attention paid to the factors which may accelerate it.

Observed Trends for an Earlier Onset of Puberty: When is the Need for Treatment Indicated?

TLDR
Clinical evaluations should be conducted on girls with pubertal onset occurring younger than 8 years, and on boys younger than 9 years at least until further prospective studies define the norms for Korea, and there is little evidence on whether psychosocial problems are associated with precocious puberty or are improved by GnRHa treatment.

Pubertal development in girls: secular trends

  • P. Kaplowitz
  • Medicine
Current opinion in obstetrics & gynecology
  • 2006
TLDR
The view that onset of any pubertal changes prior to age 8 years requires an extensive evaluation should be reevaluated and much attention should be paid to the rate of progression of Pubertal findings as to their age of appearance.

Influence of obesity on timing of puberty.

TLDR
Age of onset of pubertal maturation appears to have decreased, especially in girls, and there appear to have been selective advantages to lower metabolic rate (the 'thrifty' gene hypothesis), and earlier maturation.

Current age of onset of puberty.

TLDR
It is concluded that aggressive evaluation and treatment in girls with the onset of puberty after 6 (African-Americans) or 7 (white) years of age are unlikely to be beneficial and that the normal age of puberty is occurring earlier.

Trends in pubertal development in Europe

TLDR
The four Dutch nationwide growth surveys are useful examples assessing the secular trend in pubertal development over the past 45 years, with Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the secular changes.

Anthropometry in Adolescence -Secular Trends, Adoption, Ethnic and Environmental Differences

TLDR
The studies reported here indicate the critical importance of optimal intra-uterine, infant and childhood growth as a basis for satisfactory growth during adolescence.

Secular Trends in Pubertal Development

TLDR
More longitudinal studies are needed to understand the short- and long-term consequences of secular changes in both final height and pubertal development before the authors know how important the trends are.

Effects of changes in nutritional conditions on timing of puberty: clinical evidence from adopted children and experimental studies in the male rat.

TLDR
Among 32 patients with idiopathic central precocious puberty seen during a 3-year period, 1/4 were adopted children from developing countries who showed early sexual maturation during the catch-up process following their arrival in Belgium, and evaluated the effect of variations in early nutritional conditions on hypothalamic and testicular maturation.

Pathogenesis and epidemiology of precocious puberty. Effects of exogenous oestrogens

TLDR
The risk for children to develop precocious puberty through exposure to oestrogens in the environment or in food is very low, Nevertheless, studies of the effects of defined environmental oestrogenic substances on the human reproductive system and on pubertal development are warranted.

Factors Affecting Onset of Puberty

TLDR
Data indicate that early malnutrition during a critical developmental time window may have long-lasting effects on pubertal development, including gonadal maturation in both humans and rats.

Earlier onset of puberty in girls: relation to increased body mass index and race.

TLDR
Results are consistent with obesity's being an important contributing factor to the earlier onset of puberty in girls, and a multivariate analysis confirms that obesity (as measured by BMI) is significantly associated with early puberty in white girls and is associated withEarly puberty in black girls as well, but to a lesser extent.

Reexamination of the Age Limit for Defining When Puberty Is Precocious in Girls in the United States: Implications for Evaluation and Treatment

TLDR
The current recommendation that breast development before age 8 is precocious is based on outdated studies, and new guidelines propose that girls with either breast development or pubic hair should be evaluated if this occurs before age 7 in white girls and before age 6 in African-American girls.
