Developments in the theory of Ostwald ripening since the classic work of I. M. Lifshitz and V. V. Slyozov (LS) are reviewed and directions for future work are suggested. Recent theoretical work on the role of a finite volume fraction of coarsening phase on the ripening behavior of two-phase systems is reformulated in terms of a consistent set of notation through which each of the theories can be compared and contrasted. Although more theoretical work is necessary, these theories are in general… Expand

Phase field crystal simulations of the kinetics of Ostwald ripening in two dimensions.
The kinetics of Ostwald ripening of solid domains in the liquid phase of one-component systems in two dimensions is investigated numerically via the phase field crystal model, showing that dynamical scaling is reached during late times, and the growth law is in good agreement with the classical theory of Lifshitz, Slyozov, and Wagner. Review Progress in Ostwald ripening theories and their applications to nickel-base superalloys Part I: Ostwald ripening theories
The physical basis behind the Ostwald ripening process for two-phase mixture has been reviewed in detail, using the various theories developed to describe this process. The Ostwald ripening, alsoExpand
Ostwald ripening in a system with a high volume fraction of coarsening phase
Experiments on the coarsening behavior of two-phase mixtures in a model Pb-Sn system are reported. This system fulfills most of the assumptions of theory and has the particular advantage that all theExpand
Simulation of particle growth and Ostwald ripening via the Cahn-Hilliard equation
Abstract The Cahn-Hilliard-equation (CHE) is a diffusion equation extended by terms taking interfacial energies into account. It has been established as a useful tool to understand phase separationExpand
Ostwald ripening in ternary alloys
A theory of coarsening in an isothermal, ternary alloy is developed in an effort to understand the effects of a third chemical component on the ripening behavior of a two-phase system. The analysisExpand
The dynamics of transient Ostwald ripening
Examines numerically the time-dependent behaviour of a two-phase system undergoing transient Ostwald ripening. The evolution of selected initial particle-radius-distribution (PRD) functions wasExpand
Pore-scale modelling of Ostwald ripening
In a saturated solution with dispersed clusters of a second phase, the mechanism by which the larger clusters grow at the expense of the smaller ones is called Ostwald ripening. Although theExpand
Growth of Clusters and of Ensembles of Clusters: Ostwald Ripening and Ostwald’s Rule of Stages
In the preceding chapter, basic ideas and models of the description of growth processes for macroscopic samples of the newly evolving phase are outlined. In the present chapter these results areExpand
Pore-Scale Modeling of Ostwald Ripening
In a saturated solution with dispersed clusters of a second phase, the mechanism by which the larger clusters grow at the expense of the smaller ones is called Ostwald Ripening. Although theExpand
Ostwald ripening in concentrated alloys
The temporal power laws describing the coarsening process in a concentrated nonideal solid solution are derived. It is shown that the interfacial energy [sigma] can be determined in such a systemExpand

The effect of volume fraction of precipitate on ostwald ripening
Abstract The classical theory of the coarsening of precipitate particles by competitive growth (Ostwald ripening) is extended to include the effect of encounters between growing particles using theExpand
Theory of Ostwald ripening: Competitive growth and its dependence on volume fraction
The theory of Ostwald ripening is extended to include the dependence on the volume fraction of the minority phase. The size distribution function for droplets of the minority phase and the power lawsExpand
The dependence of ostwald ripening kinetics on particle volume fraction
Abstract A spatially homogeneous rate theory model is developed to describe the time rate of change of the radius of a spherical particle embedded in a configurationally random array of particles ofExpand
The effect of volume fraction on particle coarsening: theoretical considerations
Abstract The theory of diffusion-controlled particle coarsening developed by Lifshitz and Slyozov and Wagner (LSW) is modified to take into account the volume fraction,φ, of precipitate. TheExpand
Ostwald Ripening of Precipitates I. Numerical Solution for the Particle Size Distribution Function in Closed Systems

Kinetics of phase transitions: Theory of Ostwald ripening
A new derivation is presented for the last stage of phase separation in the kinetics of a first order phase transition, precipitation, where Ostwald ripening is the dominant mechanism. We use a timeExpand
The Effect of Size and Distribution of Second Phase Particles and Voids on Sintering

The kinetics of precipitation from supersaturated solid solutions
Abstract An analysis is made of the process whereby diffusion effects can cause the precipitation of grains of a second phase in a supersaturated solid solution. The kinetics of this type of grainExpand
