If the theories of Jerome Frank, Jay Halley, and Hans Strupp are considered as a conversation with the spirit of psychoanalysis, the subject of the conversation appears to be the struggle involved in psychotherapy. Beyond implying that there is such a struggle, the theories do not satisfactorily establish its nature. The author suggests that the struggle may have to do with the therapist's insistence on what Frank calls a sheltered environment for patient experimentation.
