The classification of int-2 as a growth factor is based primarily on the similarities between the predicted amino acid sequence and that of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), as well as other members of this expanding family of related proteins. In this review, we summarise the background to the identification of int-2 as a proto-oncogene in virally induced mouse mammary tumours and describe key features of the structure and expression of both the mouse and human homologues.
