Macedonian is the official language of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia (SRM) in the Socialist Federated Republic of Yugoslavia. According to the 1981 census (Statisticki bilten broj 1295 1981: 8, 12,18; Nova Makedonija 17.11.82: 1,3), Yugoslav citizens declaring their nationality (narodnost) as Macedonian constitute 6% (1,341,598) of the total population (22,427,585).
