We examined the radiographs from a prospective clinical study of fixation by pedicle screws and those from an experimental study in a sheep model. In the clinical study, instruments were removed from 21 patients after implantation for 11 to 16 months and the extraction torques of the screws were recorded. A structured protocol was used for the radiological examinations. In the experimental study, loaded pedicle screw instrumentations were implanted in the sheep for six or 12 weeks. After…

Does a Radiolucent Zone Surrounding the Pedicle Screws mean Nonunion
- Medicine
- 2009
The radiolUcent zones surrounding the pedicle screws after spinal fusion were closely related to spinal fusion with sacral fixation and pseudarthrosis, and these radiolucent zones mostly occurred before complete bony-union.
Radiolucent Zones Surrounding Transpedicular Screws After Lumbar Spinal Instrumented Fusion
- Medicine
- 2005
Radiolucent zones, a frequent finding following pedicle screw fixation, resulted in less favorable outcomes and surgeons should be alert to radiolUcent zones and their transformation during follow-up, according to literature review.
Radiolucent Zone around Screws is Associated with Position Change of Screw-rod Constructs
- MedicineClinical Neuroradiology

A radiologic assessment method to measure position change of screw-rod constructs over time by superposing the 3‑dimensional images assists in quantitative evaluation of screw loosening. We…
Insertion torque is not a good predictor of pedicle screw loosening after spinal instrumentation: a prospective study in 8 patients
- MedicinePatient safety in surgery
- 2010
In this unique human in-vivo study, it could be demonstrated that in vivo insertion torque alone is of minor value to estimate pullout strength, and should be combined with or replaced by more accurate measures.
Radiolucent Line around Pedicular Screws after Posterior Instrumentation for Lower Lumbar Fixation
- Medicine
- 2010
Short segment fusion may be suitable for lower lumbar spine fusion because incidence of radiolucent line surrounded pedicular screw was low and proper technique of fusion may decrease rate of radient line in long segment, which most commonly occurred in the most upper part of the operation site.
Revision characteristics of cement-augmented, cannulated-fenestrated pedicle screws in the osteoporotic vertebral body: a biomechanical in vitro investigation. Technical note.
- Medicine, EngineeringJournal of neurosurgery. Spine
- 2009
There is no proof to support the theoretical fear that while trying to remove a screw, the composite of screw and cement would not break but instead would rotate as a whole in the osteoporotic vertebral body during implantation and explantation, and the revision characteristics of cement-augmented, cannulated-fenestrated pedicle screws are not problematic.
Radiological evaluation of atlantoaxial fusion using C2 translaminar screws and C2 pedicle screws: Does the screw halo sign imply fusion failure?
- MedicineMedicine
- 2022
The purpose of this study was to identify the criteria for atlantoaxial (AA) fusion by comparing follow-up lateral radiographs and computed tomography (CT) images, and the halo sign was not significantly related to final bone fusion.
Development of a quantitative method to evaluate pedicle screw loosening after spinal instrumentation using digital tomosynthesis
- MedicineBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders
- 2022
A new method using digital tomosynthesis has the potential to aid diagnosis of pedicle screw loosening quantitatively and more accurately than conventional evaluations.
A study on the use of the Osstell apparatus to evaluate pedicle screw stability: An in-vitro study using micro-CT
- MedicinePloS one
- 2018
TheISQ value only decreased when the material volume of the internal threads disappeared, probably because the ISQ value reflects the resistance against a force in the perpendicular direction of the screw, unlike the conventional measures of fixation strength, such as pull-out force and insertion torque, which reflect axial load.
Development and validation of a quantitative method to assess pedicle screw loosening in posterior spine instrumentation on plain radiographs
- MedicineEuropean Spine Journal
- 2013
The angle between the PS axis and the cranial endplate showed good ability to change in PS loosening, and a change of at least 2° had a relatively high sensitivity and specificity to diagnose screw loosening.
