Genes differentially expressed in different tissues, during development, or during specific pathologies are of foremost interest to both basic and pharmaceutical research. "Transcript profiles" or "digital Northerns" are generated routinely by partially sequencing thousands of randomly selected clones from relevant cDNA libraries.
