The O2 consumption, EMG from m. pectoralis, body and subcutaneous temperatures were measured in ptarmigan and bantams during comparable cold exposure (−10 to −15°C in ptarmigan and 15°C in bantam). 2. In the ptarmigan the shivering was intermittent and the pectoral muscles were activated only 16% of exposure time, while the bantam shievered continuously.
