It is customary to model the shape of amplitude histograms from synthetic aperture radar imagery by a Rayleigh distribution with a tied mode. Frequently histograms emerge whose shape shows non-Rayleigb behavior, especially in the “tail.” A more acceptable model for histograms of this type is to allow the mode of the Rayleigh distribution to possess a distribution of values all its own.
