The Shona prefix hthat can also be written and pronounced as zvshould be understood as a linguistic indicator of the dative, much in the same manner that the Biblical Hebrew (BH) ל indicates direction or possession (as in the words, ‘to’, ‘for’ or ‘of’). However, when used in a manner similar to that of the BH ethical dative, the prefix happears to have no semantic value of its own, serving merely to support the suffix which then refers back to the subject of the verb when used in a DE…
