Abstract Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total organic carbon (TOC), and chlorophyll a (Chl a ) were measured monthly from November 1972 to November 1973 at stations in the upper, middle, and lower areas of Caminada and Barataria bays, Louisiana, and the Gulf of Mexico. The results were used as measures of the concentration and distribution of organic detritus in the coastal waters. There was a clear gradient of organic carbon from the estuary to the Gulf of Mexico.
