Major yolk protein (MYP), the predominant component of yolk granules in sea urchin eggs, is also contained in the coelomic fluid and nutritive phagocytes of the gonad in both sexes. MYP is stored in ovarian and testicular nutritive phagocytes prior to gametogenesis and is used during gametogenesis as material for synthesizing proteins and other components necessary for eggs and sperm.
