The role of the southern ocean in uptake and storage of anthropogenic carbon dioxide

An ocean-climate model that shows high fluxes of anthropogenic carbon dioxide into the Southern Ocean, but very low storage of anthropogenic carbon there, agrees with observation-based estimates of ocean storage of anthropogenic carbon dioxide. This low simulated storage indicates a subordinate role for deep convection in the present-day Southern Ocean. The primary mechanism transporting anthropogenic carbon out of the Southern Ocean is isopycnal transport. These results imply that if global…

A high-resolution ocean circulation and carbon cycle model is used to address the mechanisms controlling the Southern Ocean sink of anthropogenic CO2 and suggests intimate connections between oceanic carbon uptake and climate variability through the temporal variability of Ekman transport.

It is shown, via an observational system simulation experiment, that float-based sampling provides a significant opportunity for measuring the mean fluxes and monitoring the mean uptake over decadal scales, and for transforming the understanding of the Southern Ocean CO2 flux.

It is demonstrated that atmospheric CO2 and global biological export production are controlled by different regions of the Southern Ocean, whereas global export production is controlled mainly by the biological pump and circulation in the Subantarctic intermediate and mode water formation region.
The Variable Southern Ocean Carbon Sink.
- Environmental ScienceAnnual review of marine science
- 2019
The rebound and the subsequent strong, decade-long reinvigoration of the carbon sink appear to have been driven by cooling in the Pacific Ocean, enhanced stratification in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean sectors, and a reduced overturning.
Oceanography: Anthropogenic carbon and ocean pH
- Environmental Science, GeographyNature
- 2003
It is found that oceanic absorption of CO2 from fossil fuels may result in larger pH changes over the next several centuries than any inferred from the geological record of the past 300 million years.
