Cycloxygenase (COX) pathways have long been targeted for the treatment of inflammatory pain, initially through the use of NSAIDs. With the demonstration of two major COX isoforms, COX-1 and COX-2, involved in the production of prostanoids, but with different distribution and regulation, selective COX-2 inhibitors have been developed.
