Abstract The role of oxygen defects in superconductivity and their effect on the electron states has been studied by X-ray absorption fine structure on the Cu K and Ce L 3 edges, for Nd 2−x Ce x CuO 4−y (0.0 pO 2 = 1−10 −4 atm). The results indicate that the reduction enhances the electron density at the copper sites, without changing the oxygen deficiency y.
