Members of the family of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory demyelination. MMPs apparently mediate important steps in the genesis of inflammatory demyelination, such as cell migration, blood-brain/nerve barrier breakdown, demyelination, and cytokine activation.
