The most abundant protein of peripheral nerve myelin, a glycoprotein termed P0, is believed to be involved in the compaction of the myelin sheath and is postulated to be the closest relative to the ancestral gene for the immunoglobulin superfamily. Recently, P0 has indeed been shown to behave like a homophilic adhesion molecule via interactions of its extracellular domains.
