The contribution of auditory beats to the perception of target sounds differing from an interfering background by their frequency modulation (FM) pattern or by a difference in fundamental frequency (F0) was investigated. On each trial, test sounds composed of a single, second-order formant were embedded in harmonic backgrounds and presented in successive intervals.
