Toxigenic Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of the disease cholera, is prevalent in the African continent from the 1970s when the seventh pandemic spread from Asia to Africa. In the past decade, cholera has caused devastating outbreaks in much of Africa, illustrated by the recent cholera epidemics in Zimbabwe and regions of central Africa. Given the extent of cholera in Africa, a robust and efficient surveillance system should be in place to prevent and control the disease in this continent…

Figures from this paper

Cholera in Oceania
TLDR
Strengthening health delivery services in the Oceania region will ensure countries are better equipped to handle future cholera outbreaks; and further understanding the epidemiology of cholERA and the causative agent in the region could help prevent future transmission.
Molecular characterization of Vibrio cholerae responsible for cholera epidemics in Uganda by PCR, MLVA and WGS
TLDR
The V. cholerae strains showed local and regional transmission within Uganda and the East African region and to prevent, control and eliminate cholera, these countries should implement strong cross-border collaboration and regional coordination of preventive activities.
Molecular Epidemiology and Antibiotic Susceptibility of Vibrio cholerae Associated with a Large Cholera Outbreak in Ghana in 2014
TLDR
This analysis suggests different endemic reservoirs of V. cholerae in Ghana with distinct annual outbreak clusters accompanied by the occurrence of genetically distant genotypes.
Characterisation of Vibrio cholerae isolates from the 2009, 2010 and 2016 cholera outbreaks in Lusaka province, Zambia
TLDR
The emergence of multidrug resistance among the 2016 V. cholerae O1 isolates revealed that these isolates were susceptible to cotrimoxazole, tetracycline, and azithromycin, which can be used for treatment of the cholera cases.
Three transmission events of Vibrio cholerae O1 into Lusaka, Zambia
TLDR
It is suggested that locally, case-area targeted invention strategies and regionally, well-coordinated plans be in place to effectively control future cholera outbreaks in Zambia.
Recurrent Cholera Outbreaks in Sub-Saharan Africa: Moving beyond Epidemiology to Understand the Environmental Reservoirs and Drivers
TLDR
The nature and dynamics of recent cholera outbreaks in SSA are highlighted, the importance of environmental reservoirs of Vibrio cholerae, and anthropogenic and hydroclimatic drivers in controlling the dynamics of cholERA outbreaks are discussed, and key knowledge gaps and future research directions are highlighted.
Antibiotic Susceptibility Profile of ‘Vibrio Cholerae O1 Biotype El Tor Serotype Ogawa’ Outbreak in North Delhi, India
TLDR
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cholera is becoming endemic in Delhi and emergence of multiple antibiotic-resistant cholERA isolates is a concern.
ISOLATION AND GENOTYPING OF Vibrio cholerae ISOLATES FROM PATIENTS WITH CHOLERA DISEASE IN BABYLON PROVINCE
TLDR
The results revealed that all suspected stool samples showed positive isolation to Vibrio cholera species and Inaba serotype had prevailed in all V. cholerae isolates, while only one Ogawa serotype was reported as a causative agent for cholERA disease in Babylon province.
Comparative Characterization of Vibrio cholerae O1 from Five Sub-Saharan African Countries Using Various Phenotypic and Genotypic Techniques
TLDR
Molecular subtyping of isolates using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis showed a complex relationship among isolates, indicating that the same genetic lineage is present in multiple countries.
Detection and Quantification of Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio vulnificus in Coastal Waters of Guinea-Bissau (West Africa)
TLDR
This study represents the first detection and quantification of co-occurring Vibrio species in West African coastal waters, highlighting the potential health risk associated with the persistence of human pathogenic VIBrio species.

The Epidemiology of Cholera in Africa
TLDR
Since cholera has become endemic throughout much of Africa, local and foreign governments and relief organizations must coordinate their efforts to prevent unnecessary loss of life throughout that continent.
Evidence for several waves of global transmission in the seventh cholera pandemic
TLDR
It is shown here that the seventh pandemic has spread from the Bay of Bengal in at least three independent but overlapping waves with a common ancestor in the 1950s, and several transcontinental transmission events are identified.
Molecular Characterization of a New Ribotype ofVibrio cholerae O139 Bengal Associated with an Outbreak of Cholera in Bangladesh
TLDR
Results suggested that the new ribotype of Bengal vibrios possibly originated from an existing strain of V. cholerae O139, which is also undergoing considerable reassortments in genetic elements encoding antimicrobial resistance.
The origin of the Haitian cholera outbreak strain.
TLDR
The Haitian epidemic is probably the result of the introduction, through human activity, of a V. cholerae strain from a distant geographic source, and analysis of genomic variation of the Haitian isolates reveals a more distant relationship with circulating South American isolates.
Cholera: a new homeland in Africa?
TLDR
The persistence or control of cholera in Africa will be a key indicator of global efforts to reach the Millennium Development Goals and of recent commitments by leaders of the G-8 countries to increase development aid to the region.
Cholera Due to Altered El Tor Strains of Vibrio cholerae O1 in Bangladesh
TLDR
All of the El Tor strains of V. cholerae O1 isolated since 2001 produced CT of the classical biotype, while those isolated before 2001 producedCT of theEl Tor biotype.
Evolutionary Relationships of Pathogenic Clones of Vibrio cholerae by Sequence Analysis of Four Housekeeping Genes
TLDR
The results show that the three pathogenic clones of V. cholerae are very closely related and that there has been a high level of recombination in their evolution.
Comparative genomics reveals mechanism for short-term and long-term clonal transitions in pandemic Vibrio cholerae
TLDR
Based on the comparative genomics, it is concluded that V. cholerae undergoes extensive genetic recombination via lateral gene transfer, and, therefore, genome assortment, not serogroup, should be used to define pathogenic V.cholerae clones.
A large cholera outbreak due to a new cholera toxin variant of the Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor biotype in Orissa, Eastern India.
TLDR
The results of this study suggest that cholera-causing V. cholerae strains are constantly evolving in epidemic areas, highlighting the potential of the emergence of more virulent strains.
