Abstract 2 Keto-4-pentenoic acid (2K4PA) was synthesised from l -allylglycine (L-AG) using purified l -amino acid oxidase and isolated relatively free from allylglycine (AG) contamination. 2 keto-4-pentenoic acid is a potent inhibitor of cerebral glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) activity, being one to two thousand times more effective than AG.
