Based on data obtained from the Tucson Epidemiologic Study of Chronic Lung Disease that included body weight, questionnaire responses, and spirometry, we found that among subjects with no respiratory symptoms, 28.0 percent reported insomnia (difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep) and 9.4 percent reported daytime sleepiness. Among subjects with respiratory symptoms, cough and/or wheeze, the rates of sleep complaints increased. With one symptom, 39.1 percent reported insomnia and 12.4…
Prevalence of sleep-related symptoms in a primary care population - their relation to asthma and COPD.
TLDR
The increased likelihood for OSAHS-related symptoms in COPD patients, in contrast to patients with asthma, designates them as a target group for the screening of OSA HS in primary care.
The natural history of insomnia and its relationship to respiratory symptoms.
TLDR
It is found that the prevalence of insomnia was significantly related to cough, dyspnea, or wheeze, and subjects with persistent or new respiratory symptoms at survey II were less likely to have remission of insomnia by that survey and more likely to develop new insomnia.
Correlates of daytime sleepiness in patients with asthma.
Sleep Disturbances and Health-Related Quality of Life in Adults with Steady-State Bronchiectasis
TLDR
In adults with steady-state bronchiectasis, sleep disturbances are more common than in healthy subjects and are related to poorer QoL, including depression, aging, nighttime cough and increased sputum volume.
Symptoms related to obstructive sleep apnoea are common in subjects with asthma, chronic bronchitis and rhinitis in a general population.
TLDR
Symptoms of daytime sleepiness and respiratory symptoms and conditions affecting mainly the lower respiratory tract, such as chronic bronchitis and asthma, were related with symptoms common in obstructive sleep apnoea.
Prevalence of insomnia symptoms in patients with sleep-disordered breathing.
TLDR
Research is needed to determine the degree to which insomnia and related symptoms and behaviors interfere with SDB treatment, and to assess the prevalence of insomnia symptoms in patients with objectively diagnosed sleep-disordered breathing.
Chronic cough in patients with sleep-disordered breathing
TLDR
Chronic cough is prevalent in patients with sleep-disordered breathing and is associated with female sex, symptoms of nocturnal heartburn and rhinitis, and the impact of continuous positive airway pressure therapy on cough associated with SDB is investigated.
Factors affecting sleep disturbances in children and adolescents.
Sleep disturbance and daytime symptoms in wheezing school‐aged children
TLDR
In wheezing school‐aged children, decreased quality of sleep and increased daytime tiredness and sleepiness were more often reported and Upper airway symptoms were related to the sleep disturbances.

Prevalence of reported sleep disturbances in a general adult population and their relationship to obstructive airways diseases.
TLDR
It is concluded that, in the general adult population, sleep disorder symptoms increase with age and usually are greater in women, and there is an increased prevalence of sleep symptoms among adults with chronic airways obstructive disease, especially those with coexistent asthma and chronic bronchitis.
Risk factors associated with complaints of insomnia in a general adult population. Influence of previous complaints of insomnia.
TLDR
Complaints of insomnia tend to be a persistent or recurrent problem over long periods of time, and female gender, advancing age, and concomitant health problems also are important risk factors.
Nocturnal hypoxaemia and quality of sleep in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease.
TLDR
Hypoxaemia during sleep was related to waking values of SaO2 and PaCO2 but not to other daytime measures of lung function, and that the poorer a patient's arterial oxygenation throughout the night the more disturbed his sleep.
Nocturnal asthma: features of attacks, sleep and breathing patterns.
TLDR
Sleep and breathing features of 12 adult patients with asthma who reported a history of nocturnal attacks were compared with those in control subjects of similar sex, age, and weight to find out whether sleep efficiency was significantly altered and duration of sleep stages was not significantly different.
Symptoms and experiences in chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
TLDR
A heterogeneous group of 146 patients with chronic bronchitis and emphysema were asked to rate the frequency with which 89 symptoms and experiences occurred during their breathing difficulties, finding symptoms of dyspnea were the most frequently reported during breathing difficulties.
The effect of oxygenation on sleep quality in chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
TLDR
Transient nocturnal hypoxemia was commonest during REM sleep in both patients and healthy subjects and its duration was not related to any sleep variable examined.
Sleep, arousals, and oxygen desaturation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The effect of oxygen therapy.
TLDR
The 95% confidence bands for arterial O2 saturation (SaO2) in the various sleep stages suggest that it is not hypoxemia per se, but an associated phenomenon such as hypercapnia that causes the arousals.
Risk factors in a general population for snoring. Importance of cigarette smoking and obesity.
TLDR
It is proposed that the effect of smoking may be related to the production of upper airway inflammation and edema by cigarette smoke, and that smoking cessation may eventually reduce snoring risk.
Sleep hypoxemia in young adults with cystic fibrosis.
TLDR
Sleep oxygen desaturation may contribute to the development or progression of cor pulmonale in some patients with CF, but it seems to be most severe only in those with advanced disease.
