Destruction of articular cartilage is a key feature of a number of arthritides, osteoarthritis prominent among them. Aggrecan degradation, caused by increased activity of proteolytic enzymes that degrade macromolecules in the cartilage extracellular matrix, is followed by irreversible collagen degradation.
