The long-standing observations that respiratory secretions contain virus-neutralizing substances (1-3) have recently been extended by the demonstration that antibody activity associated with the yA-globulin in nasal secretion may protect against respiratory virus infection (4). Since protection was most clearly seen in individuals with relatively high titers of nasal antibody, and since yA-globulin is known to be selectively accumulated in nasal secretion (5, 6), it seems possible that local…

The mechanism of appearance of immunoglobulin A in nasal secretions in man.
TLDR
Experiments suggest that rapid selective secretion of circulating 11 S IgA does not occur as a mechanism of IgA accumulation in nasal secretions, and are consistent with the following hypotheses: (a) circulating 7S IgA is a source of part of the 7 S Ig a found in nasalsecretions; and (b) the remainder of the nasal secretion may be synthesized locally in the tissues of the upper respiratory tract.
Effect of immunotherapy on appearance of antibodies to ragweed in external secretions.
The proteins in nasal secretion. II. A longitudinal study of IgA and neutralizing antibody levels in nasal washings from men infected with influenza virus.
TLDR
Findings suggest that the immunologic response to influenza virus at the mucous membrane surface may play a role in limiting infection, and thereby avert clinical illness.
Nasal Secretion Protein Responses in Patients with Wild-Type Adenovirus Disease
TLDR
The results suggest a nonspecific protective function for secretion protein, although the possibility that field study trainees were protected by specific neutralizing antibody present in the nasal secretion is not excluded.
Circadian and Interpersonal Variability of Iga in Nasal Secretions
TLDR
The present study shows that a serial observation of four samples over the day would be best for finding a hypo condition, and if only one sample can be taken, the later part of the afternoon is the best time in order to discover the deficiency, if any.
Differences between IgA and IgE as secretory proteins.
TLDR
The view that IgE is a secretory immunoglobulin is supported in that it is present in NW in proportions greater than expected if it diffused from serum, however, IgE differs from secretory IgA in that ratios of IgE to total protein are greater in serum than in NW.
Effect of specific humoral immunity and some non-specific factors on resistance of volunteers to respiratory coronavirus infection
TLDR
Although total secretory IgA was significantly associated only with reduction of symptoms, total protein in nasal washings appeared to protect against infection also, indicating that other locally produced proteins, not identified, may be associated with resistance.
The pathophysiology of rhinitis. II. Assessment of the sources of protein in histamine-induced nasal secretions.
TLDR
Histamine stimulates secretion by both a direct action that increases plasma protein extravasation and by an indirect reflex mechanism that stimulates glandular secretion.
Immunoglobulin-specific radioimmunoprecipitation assays for quantitation of nasal secretory antibodies to hemagglutinin of type A influenza viruses
TLDR
Radioimmunoprecipitation assays were developed to selectively quantitate class-specific antibodies to purified hemagglutinins of type A influenza virus in nasal secretions and the pattern of heterologous immunoglobulin-specific antibody responses tended to be similar to those observed with the homologous HA subunit.

Protein Composition of Nasal Secretion During Respiratory Virus Infection
TLDR
The enhanced excretion of γ A globulin in nasal secretion during infection probably did not contribute significantly to the clinical recovery of these initially antibody-free volunteers, and antibody titers against Coxsackie A-21 were negligible for up to 17 days following inoculation.
CHARACTERISTICS OF AN IMMUNE SYSTEM COMMON TO CERTAIN EXTERNAL SECRETIONS
TLDR
The γ1A present in saliva and colostrum exists largely in the form of higher polymers, the major component of which has a sedimentation coefficient of 11S, and its properties including the local production of a distinctive type of antibody separate it from the "systemic" system responsible for the production of circulating antibody.
Relationship Between Nasal and Humoral Antipoliomyelitic Substances
TLDR
These authors consider the normal nasal mucosa a valuable defense against infection with the virus and believe this property to be distinct from that shown to be in the serum.
NEUTRALIZATION OF THE VIRUS OF POLIOMYELITIS BY NASAL WASHINGS
TLDR
It is suggested that the production of healthy carriers through contamination with the virus of poliomyelitis may be determined by the presence or absence of this inactivating or neutralizing property in the secretions, whether this effect operates to prevent actual invasion of the virus and production of infection.
The relationship between the antipoliomyelitic properties of human nasopharyngeal secretions and blood serums.
TLDR
Results were insufficient to demonstrate an association between the neutralizing capacities of serum and nasal washings, and failure of these earlier studies to relate the antipoliomyelitic property of serum with that of nasal Washings led.
Quantitative Determination of 6.6 S γ-Globulins, β2A-Globulins and γ1-Macroglobulins in Human Serum
TLDR
The γ1-macroglobulins were intermediate in mobility and the β2A-globulin group, as a group, migrated most rapidly, although some migrated more rapidly.
Immunoglobulin A Production in Ataxia Telangiectasia
Serum from five patients with ataxia telangiectasia contained no detectable immunoglobulin A (IgA). However, there was evidence (by immunofluorescence) of IgA in the bone marrow of the three patients
Persistence of Neutralizing Antibody in Adult Volunteers Immunized With Adenovirus Soluble Antigens
TLDR
All 17 men who were given the group-specific antigen of either adenovirus 1 or 2 developed antibody and measurable levels of these antibodies persisted for extended periods of time.
