We present predictions for the numbers of ultracool dwarfs in the Galactic disc population that could be detected by the WFCAM/UKIDSS Large Area Survey and Ultra Deep Survey. Simulated samples of objects are created with masses and ages drawn from different mass functions and birthrates. Each object is then given absolute magnitudes in different passbands based on empirically derived bolometric correction versus effective temperature relationships (or model predictions for Y dwarfs). These are… Expand
A large spectroscopic sample of L and T dwarfs from UKIDSS LAS: peculiar objects, binaries, and space density
We present the spectroscopic analysis of a large sample of late-M, L, and T dwarfs from the United Kingdom Deep Infrared Sky Survey. Using the YJHK photometry from the Large Area Survey and theExpand
Four faint T dwarfs from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Southern Stripe
We present the optical and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy of four faint T dwarfs newly discovered from the UKIDSS first data release. The sample, drawn from an imaged area of ∼136 deg2 toExpand
Two T dwarfs from the UKIDSS early data release
Context: We report on the first ultracool dwarf discoveries from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey Early Data Release (LAS EDR), in particular the discovery of T dwarfsExpand
Contamination by field late-M, L, and T dwarfs in deep surveys
Context. Deep photometric surveys of substellar objects in young clusters and high-redshift quasars are affected by contaminant sources at different heliocentric distances. If not correctly takenExpand
76 T dwarfs from the UKIDSS LAS : benchmarks, kinematics and an updated space density
We report the discovery of 76 new T dwarfs from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS). Near-infrared broad- and narrow-band photometry and spectroscopy are presented forExpand
The sub-stellar birth rate from UKIDSS
We present a new sample of mid L to mid T dwarfs with effective temperatures of 1100 to 1700 K selected from the UKIDSS Large Area Survey and confirmed with infrared spectra from X-Shooter/VLT. ThisExpand
Southern infrared proper motion survey - III. Constraining the mass function of low mass stars
The stellar mass function is one of the fundamental distributions of stellar astrophysics. Its form at masses similar to the Sun was found by Salpeter (1955, ApJ, 121, 161) to be a power-law m -αExpand
A search for southern ultracool dwarfs in young moving groups
We associate 132 low-mass ultracool dwarfs in the southern hemisphere as candidate members of five moving groups (MGs) using photometric and astrometric selection techniques. Of these objects, weExpand
Probabilistic selection of high-redshift quasars
High-redshift quasars (HZQs) with redshifts of z ≳ 6 are so rare that any photometrically selected sample of sources with HZQ-like colours is likely to be dominated by Galactic stars and brown dwarfsExpand
Measuring the Initial Mass Function of Low Mass Stars and Brown Dwarfs
I review efforts to determine the form and any lower limit to the initial mass function in the Galactic disk, using observations of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the field, young clusters andExpand

THE SUBSTELLAR MASS FUNCTION: A BAYESIAN APPROACH
We report our efforts to constrain the form of the low-mass star and brown dwarf mass function via Bayesian inference. Recent surveys of M, L, and T dwarfs in the local solar neighborhood are anExpand

Luminosity Functions of Young Clusters: Modeling the Substellar Mass Regime
We predict near-infrared luminosity functions of young (5 Myr to 1 Gyr) star clusters by combining evolutionary models of very low mass (1 MJ to 0.15 M☉) dwarfs with empirical bolometric corrections.Expand
