This article discusses the concept of information and its intimate relationship with physics. After an introduction of all the necessary quantum mechanical and information theoretical concepts we analyse Landauer's principle which states that the erasure of information is inevitably accompanied by the generation of heat. We employ this principle to rederive a number of results in classical and quantum information theory whose rigorous mathematical derivations are difficult. This demonstrates… Expand
Landauer's principle and the conservation of information
Abstract Erasure of information requires the dissipation of a minimal amount of energy as being formulated in Landauer's principle. This profound concept in information processing has recently beenExpand
Landauer's Principle and Divergenceless Dynamical Systems
TLDR
An extended Landauer- like principle valid for general dynamical systems (not necessarily Hamiltonian) governed by divergenceless phase space flows is explored. Expand
Differential Landauer's principle
TLDR
A differential version of Landauer's principle is derived: It is shown that, in order to record some information, the memory has to be driven out of equilibrium and linked to the rate at which entropy is produced at every time of the erasure process. Expand
Quantum measurements and Landauer’s principle
Information processing systems must obey laws of physics. One of particular examples of this general statement is known as Landauer’s principle - irreversible operations (such as erasure) performedExpand
Colloquium: The physics of Maxwell's demon and information
Maxwell's demon was born in 1867 and still thrives in modern physics. He plays important roles in clarifying the connections between two theories: thermodynamics and information. Here, we present theExpand
The Physics of Information: From Maxwell to Landauer
We summarize recent experimental and theoretical progress achieved in the physics of information. We highlight the intimate connection existing between information and energy from Maxwell’s demon andExpand

Landauer's principle in the quantum regime.
We demonstrate the validity of Landauer's erasure principle in the strong coupling quantum regime by treating the system-reservoir interaction in a thermodynamic way. We show that the initialExpand

Landauer's principle and non-equilibrium statistical ensembles
Abstract Landauer's principle is fundamental for the physics of information. It establishes the least amount of energy that needs to be dissipated in order to erase a bit of information. Using theExpand
