This chapter provides an overview of the phonetic aspects of Japanese obstruent geminates, referred to as sokuon in the traditional Japanese literature. It starts by reviewing the acoustic correlates of Japanese geminates. The primarily acoustic correlate has been shown to be constriction duration, accompanied by various secondary cues.
