Context. This is the third study of a series dedicated to the observed parallelism of properties between galaxy clusters and groups (GCGs) and early-type galaxies (ETGs). Aims. Here we investigate the physical origin of the mass–radius relation (MRR). Methods. Having collected literature data on masses and radii for objects going from globular clusters (GCs) to ETGs and GCGs, we set up the MR plane and compare the observed distribution with the MRR predicted by theoretical models for both the…

Tomography of the Ie-Re and L-Sigma Planes
We have analyzed the distribution of early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the effective surface intensity vs. effective radius (Ie−Re) plane and in the total luminosity vs. central stellar velocity
Past, Present, and Future of the Scaling Relations of Galaxies and Active Galactic Nuclei
We review the properties of the established Scaling Relations (SRs) of galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN), focusing on their origin and expected evolution back in time, providing a short
Skalnaté Pleso 0 , 0 – 12 , ( 0 ) Quasar emission lines as virial luminosity estimators
Quasars accreting matter at very high rates (known as extreme Population A [xA]) may provide a new class of distance indicators covering cosmic epochs from present day up to less than 1 Gyr from the

The fundamental plane of clusters of galaxies
We have analyzed the growth curves and the surface brightness light profiles of the clusters of the WINGS sample (Fasano et al. 2006) in the B and V bands, measuring the effective radii, the
The Origin of the Mass-Radius Relation of Early-Type Galaxies
Early-type galaxies obey a narrow relation traced by their stellar content between the mass and size (Mass- Radius relation). The wealth of recently acquired observational data essentially confirms
The effects of the cluster environment on the galaxy mass-size relation in MACS J1206.2-0847
The dense environment of galaxy clusters strongly influences the nature of galaxies. Their abundance and diversity is imprinted on the stellar-mass–size plane. Here, we study the cause of the size
On the Fundamental Plane of the Galactic globular cluster system
Context. The globular clusters of our Galaxy have been found to lie close to a plane in the logRe ,l ogσ, SBe space, on the continuation of the Fundamental Plane that is known to characterize the
The Kormendy relation of massive elliptical galaxies at z ~ 1.5: evidence for size evolution
We present the morphological analysis based on HST-NIC2 (0.075 arcsec pixel -1 ) images in the F160W filter of a sample of nine massive field (>10 11 M ⊙ ) galaxies spectroscopically classified as
The stellar-to-halo mass relation over the past 12 Gyr
Aims. Understanding the link between the galaxy properties and the dark matter halos they reside in and their coevolution is a powerful tool for constraining the processes related to galaxy
The hierarchical formation of the brightest cluster galaxies
We use semi-analytic techniques to study the formation and evolution of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). We show the extreme hierarchical nature of these objects and discuss the limitations of
The formation of the brightest cluster galaxies in cosmological simulations: the case for AGN feedback
We use 500 pc resolution cosmological simulations of a Virgo-like galaxy cluster to study the properties of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) that forms at the center of the halo. We compared two
Cosmological Interpretation of the Color–Magnitude Diagrams of Galaxy Clusters
We investigate the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of cluster galaxies in the hierarchical $\Lambda$-CDM cosmological scenario using both single stellar populations and simple galaxy models. First, we
Structural Properties of Central Galaxies in Groups and Clusters
Using a statistically representative sample of 911 central galaxies (CENs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 4 group catalogue, we study how the structure (shape and size) of the
