Several previous studies revealed that pharmaceuticals with aliphatic amine function exhibit a higher toxicity toward algae than toward other aquatic organisms. Here we investigated the pH-dependent toxicity of the five basic pharmaceuticals fluoxetine, its metabolite norfluoxetine, propranolol, lidocaine, and trimipramine.
