Although the basis for the high mortality rate for patients with mixed bacterial infections is likely to be multifactorial, there is evidence for a synergistic effect of muramyldipeptide (MDP) with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines by mononuclear phagocytes.
