The organization of the repeat unit of the ribosomal genes has been determined in 15 different species of vertebrates. The EcoRI and BamHI restriction maps of the rDNA from single individuals of different species of fishes, amphibians, and reptiles have been analysed. Two rDNA clones from Xenopus laevis (representing one complete repeat unit) were used as probes in Southern blots to detect restriction fragments containing ribosomal genes.
