STUDY OBJECTIVES To determine the optimal number of pleural biopsy (PLBX) specimens for a diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy. DESIGN Retrospective review. SETTING County hospital. METHODS We reviewed all percutaneous needle biopsy specimens of the parietal pleura in 30 patients who had tuberculous pleurisy. Data are reported as mean+/-SEM and statistical comparisons are done with the Mann-Whitney test. We accepted p<0.05 as statistically significant. RESULTS The number of biopsy…
Closed percutaneous pleural biopsy. A lost art in the new era.
TLDR
Obtaining 4 or more biopsy samples, and larger specimens of 3mm and more for histopathological evaluation, through percutaneous pleural biopsy, results in a better diagnostic yield for tuberculous pleurisy.
Determining the optimal number of specimens to obtain with needle biopsy of the pleura.
TLDR
The diagnostic yield increased with the number of biopsy samples in the total group and the group with malignancy but not in the groupWith tuberculous effusions, and the best diagnostic performance for malignant pathology was obtained with four samples.
Diagnostic Yield of Closed Pleural Biopsy in Undiagnosed Exudative Pleural Effusions.
TLDR
Percutaneous closed needle pleural biopsy still holds a significant role in cases of undiagnosed exudative pleural effusions where thoracoscopy is not available, being also a cost effective approach for developing countries.
CAUSES OF LYMPHOCYTIC EXUDATIVE PLEURAL EFFUSION AS REVEALED BY PERCUTANEOUS PLEURAL BIOPSY: Experience From Peshawar
TLDR
Among diagnosed patients, tuberculosis and malignancy were the most common causes of lymphocytic exudative pleural effusion in this retrospective study conducted in Peshawar.
The visual diagnosis of tuberculous pleuritis under medical thoracoscopy: a retrospective series of 91 cases.
TLDR
Medical thoracoscopy with combined biopsy is an accurate and safe method for diagnosing TP and presents a variety of scopic phenotypes under medical thorACoscopy.
Diagnostic yield of closed pleural biopsy in exudative pleural effusion.
TLDR
It is shown that closed pleural biopsy is still of value as a diagnostic procedure, and should be carried out prior to invasive procedures such as thoracoscopy or open pleuralBiopsy.
Ultrasound Assisted Pleural Biopsy with Abram Needle is a Valuable Tool in diagnosing Exudative Lymphocytic Pleural Effusions
TLDR
It is concluded that Abram needle pleural biopsy using ultrasound assistance is very safe and excellent diagnostic tool in diagnosing exudative lymphocytic pleural effusions.
Predictive Models for Tuberculous Pleural Effusions in a High Tuberculosis Prevalence Region
TLDR
An affordable model that includes age <47 years and either pleural fluid adenosine deaminase enzyme (PADA) >35 U/l or pleural serum protein ratio >0.710 is proposed for timely diagnosis of TPE in geographical regions with a high prevalence of TB.
Thoracoscopic pleural biopsy as an aid to diagnosis in pediatric tuberculosis with pleural involvement.
TLDR
Thoracoscopic pleural biopsy is a sensitive aid to the diagnosis of pleural tuberculosis in children because it achieves positive histology, culture, and drug sensitivities and establishes microbiological diagnosis in five out of the seven patients.

Cytologic and bacteriologic analysis of fluid and pleural biopsy specimens with Cope's needle. Study of 414 patients.
TLDR
The repetition of the dual procedure is indicated considering the scant morbidity and zero mortality, and the dual diagnostic sensitivity in the series of thoracenteses and pleural biopsies made with a Cope's needle was 86% in tuberculosis and 79% in neoplasia with 100% specificity.
Comparison of the diagnostic values of biopsies of the pleura and cytologic evaluation of pleural fluids.
TLDR
Percutaneous needle biopsy of the parietal pleura is less efficacious in the diagnosis of malignant pleural disease than is cytologic evaluation of the fluid sediment, whereas in the diagnoses of tuberculous pleurisy, pleural biopsy proved superior.
Sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of closed pleural biopsy.
TLDR
Closed pleural biopsy with simultaneous fluid analysis is a valuable diagnostic procedure in community hospital patients, but a nonspecific result does not exclude malignant disease.

To evaluate the usefulness of performing pleural biopsy in every patient with undiagnosed pleural disease, regardless of the presence of fluid, a total of 222 biopsies were performed in 163 patients
Diagnosis of tuberculous pleurisy by culture of pleural biopsy specimen.
TLDR
Pleural biopsy cultures for tubercle bacilli, performed on specimens from 63 consecutive patients with exudative pleural effusions, grew out Mycobacterium tuberculosis from the tissue of 16 patients, which proved to have tuberculous pleurisy.
NEEDLE BIOPSY OF PARIETAL PLEURA IN 124 CASES.
TLDR
This paper is an account of the experience of pleural needle biopsy in 124 patients with pleural effusion at the time of thoracentesis, and the apparent simplicity and safety of the procedure without morbidity or discomfort to the patient.
Needle biopsy of the pleura in the diagnosis of pleural effusion
TLDR
Pleural fluid cytology was unhelpful in establishing the presence of a malignancy, and culture of the biopsy specimen was helpful in one case.
Needle biopsy of the parietal pleura; a preliminary report.
TLDR
A simple method for needle biopsy of the parietal pleura is described that may obviate prolonged and costly diagnostic procedures and even, in some cases, cure serofibrinous pleurisy.
Pleural effusion: laboratory tests in 300 cases.
TLDR
The cause of pleural effusion was studied in 300 consecutive patients by clinical examination and laboratory tests and the various causes and the usefulness of the different investigative procedures are discussed.
