The ontogeny of a number of sensorimotor reflexes has been studied in the Mongolian gerbil. In contrast to a number of other mammals, the gerbil has relatively long and strong hindlimbs but small forelimbs, indicating their different importance for a number of locomotor acts, and during the developmental period studied, the hindlimbs grow at a much faster rate than the forelimbs.
