Plant cell suspension cultures respond to osmotic changes by alterations in levels of free cellular calcium. Using the aequorin recombinant method, we have measured the spatial and temporal characteristics of calcium signatures in the nucleus and the cytosol of BY-2 tobacco suspension cells challenged with hypo- or hyper-osmotic shock. We show here that the nuclear compartment contributes together with the cytosol to produce calcium signal patterns that discriminate hypo- from hyper-osmotic…
2 Plant Cell Nuclei Are Able to Generate Calcium Signals in Response to Exogenous Stimuli
TLDR
On the basis of both the experimental and modeling data, evidences of the autonomy of the nucleus which is able to generate its own calcium signals and to maintain its calcium homeostasis by itself are brought.
Cytosolic and Nucleosolic Calcium Signaling in Response to Osmotic and Salt Stresses Are Independent of Each Other in Roots of Arabidopsis Seedlings
TLDR
Transgenic plants containing a fusion protein, comprising rat parvalbumin with either a nuclear export sequence (PV-NES) or a nuclear localization sequence (NLS-PV), are generated to selectively buffer the cytosolic or nucleosolic calcium, indicating that PV can effectively buffer the increase of [Ca2+] in response to various stimuli in Arabidopsis.
Calcium Signaling and Homeostasis in Nuclei
TLDR
On the basis of both the experimental and modeling data, evidences of the autonomy of the nucleus which is able to generate its own calcium signals and to maintain its calcium homeostasis by itself are brought.
Calcium homeostasis in plant cell nuclei.
TLDR
Data is discussed and hypotheses suggesting that, while interacting with other organelles, the nucleus has the potential to generate and regulate calcium signals on its own are presented.

Cell-type-specific calcium responses to drought, salt and cold in the Arabidopsis root.
TLDR
Targeted expression of aequorin circumvented the technical difficulties involved in fluorescent dye injection as well as the lack of cell specificity of constitutively expressed aEquorin, and revealed a new level of complexity in root calcium signalling.

Cold calcium signaling in Arabidopsis involves two cellular pools and a change in calcium signature after acclimation.

Elemental propagation of calcium signals in response-specific patterns determined by environmental stimulus strength.
TLDR
It is shown that the spatiotemporal patterns of hypo-osmotically induced Ca(2+) signals vary dramatically with stimulus strength in embryonic cells of the marine alga Fucus.
Cell signalling: Control of free calcium in plant cell nuclei
TLDR
The results indicate that in plants some processes in the nucleus may be executed in response to an autonomously regulated nuclear calcium signal, although it is not clear whether this happens in animal cells as well.
Distinct calcium signaling pathways regulate calmodulin gene expression in tobacco.
TLDR
Wind stimuli and cold shock invoke separate Ca(2+) signaling pathways that are spatially distinct, and comparison between MAQ 7.11 and MAQ 2.4 seedlings confirmed that wind stimuli andcold shock invoke different Ca( 2+) signaling paths.
Hypoosmotic Shock Induces Increases in Cytosolic Ca2+ in Tobacco Suspension-Culture Cells
TLDR
If cells were subject to hypoosmotic shock in Ca2- depleted medium, increases in luminescence could be induced up to 20 min after the shock by adding Ca2+ to the medium, suggesting that hypoosMotic shock-induced [Ca2+]cyt elevation results from the activity of a Ca1+ channel in the plasma membrane or associated hypoos motic sensing components that require Ca2+, independent phosphorylation and a continued stimulus to maintain full activity.
Distinct functions of nuclear and cytoplasmic calcium in the control of gene expression
TLDR
It is shown that gene expression is differentially controlled by nuclear and cytoplasmic calcium signals which enable a single second messenger to generate diverse transcriptional responses.
Calmodulin isoforms differentially enhance the binding of cauliflower nuclear proteins and recombinant TGA3 to a region derived from the Arabidopsis Cam-3 promoter.
TLDR
It is shown that at least four DNA binding proteins from cauliflower nuclear extracts are also calmodulin (CaM) binding proteins, consistent with the idea that a Ca(2+)-mediated signalling pathway eliciting some changes in gene expression may consist of CaM, or a structurally related Ca2+ binding protein, and transcription factors.
