One of the strong motivations for studying the arithmetic fundamental groups of algebraic varieties comes from the hope that they will provide group-theoretic access to Diophantine geometry. This is most clearly expressed by the so-called ‘section conjecture’ of Grothendieck: Let F be a number field and let X → Spec(F) be a smooth and compact hyperbolic curve. After some choice of base point, we get an exact sequence
