Abstract In this Note, we extend the mortar element method to the approximation of the 3D Maxwell's equations by use of Nedelec's edge elements of second family. Integral coupling conditions are proposed in order to allow for nonmatching grids at the interfaces between subdomains and result in a globally nonconforming approximation. The convergence analysis reveals that the method is optimal up to a √∣ln h ∣ factor.
