We have previously shown that caveolin-1, the principal structural protein component of caveolar membrane domains, inhibits cellular proliferation and induces cell cycle arrest. We demonstrate here for the first time that caveolin-1 is expressed in satellite cells but not in mature muscle fibers. Satellite cells are quiescent myogenic precursors that, after muscle injury, become mitotically active, proliferate, and fuse together or, to existing myofibers, to form new muscle fibers.
