The ischemic heart suffers from nutrient deprivation, lack of oxygen, metabolic acidosis, hyperkalemia and Ca(2+) overload as well as high level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation; these risk factors endanger the cardiomyoctes and may cause their demise.
