The microstructure of rapidly solidified Al−Mn alloys containing 18 to 25.3 wt pct Mn was studied by transmission electron microscopy. One of the phases found in the microstructure exhibits icosahedral symmetry manifested in electron diffraction patterns having five-fold symmetry. A new structural concept is proposed to account for the observed electron diffraction patterns. The structure is assumed to be composed of many connected polyhedra. Although not forming a regular lattice, such…
Morphology and microstructure of Al−Li−Cu quasicrystals
Solidification microstructure of the stable icosahedral Al5.1 Li3Cu alloy has been studied by scanning electron microscopy. Free surface solidification morphology was found to consist of heavily
Microstructural characterization of a rapidly solidified Al-Mg-Mn powder alloy
A detailed investigation concerning the microstructural characteristics of a rapidly solidified Al-Mg-Mn powder alloy has been carried out. A range of microstructures was observed in the atomized
Icosahedral and decagonal phase formation in Al-Mn alloys
The solidification conditions leading to the formation of the icosahedral phase in Al-Mn alloys have been investigated, using samples prepared by melt spinning and electron beam surface melting. It
Quasicrystalline-to-crystalline transformation in rapidly solidified Mg32(Al, Zn)49
Abstract A ternary Mg-Al-Zn alloy, corresponding to the Mg32(Al, Zn)49 composition, was rapidly solidified from the liquid state by melt spinning. The as-solidified structure showed nodular
The substructure of quasicrystalline Al‐Mn alloy observed by TEM
The morphology of the icosahedral phase in Al86Mn14 alloy has been observed as flower‐like and of granular shape by TEM. These two kinds of morphologies may be regarded as the different sections of a
The nature of the topological disorder in the rapidly quenched Al73Mn21Si6 icosahedral phase
Abstract A rapidly solidified Al73Mn21Si6 icosahedral alloy has been studied by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. AH reflections were found to fit the
A non-icosahedral T2 (Al6Li3Cu) phase
Abstract T2 (Al6Li3Cu) precipitates formed by solid-state reactions in an Al-Li-Cu ternary alloy have been studied by convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED). Asymmetries observed in the CBED

Precipitation in rapidly solidified Al-Mn alloys
Precipitation at 450 °C was studied in melt-spun ribbons containing up to 15 wt pct Mn in solid solution in Al. The as-spun ribbons were microsegregation-free at compositions up to 5 wt pct Mn, but
Microdiffraction and lattice resolution studies of fivefold symmetry gold particles
The structure of fivefold particles is studied using single particle diffraction in a STEM microscope and lattice images. The results show excellent agreement with the rhombohedral and body‐centered
