Through inhibitory G protein-coupled melatonin receptors, melatonin regulates intracellular signaling systems and also the transcriptional activity of certain genes. Clock genes are proposed as regulatory factors in forming dopamine-related behaviors and mood and melatonin has the ability to regulate these processes.
