Mothers' sensitive responses to their infants have evolutionary importance and are likely hardwired into the maternal brain. Mood disorders are associated with aberrant neural processing of emotion in regions overlapping with 'maternal sensitivity networks' and this could compromise maternal processing of infant signals.
