We analyze a large set of new and archival photometric and spectroscopic observations of LMC X-3 to arrive at a self-consistent dynamical model for the system. Using echelle spectra obtained with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle instrument on the 6.5 m Magellan Clay telescope and the UVES instrument on the second 8.2 m Very Large Telescope, we find a velocity semiamplitude for the secondary star of K 2 = 241.1 ± 6.2 km s–1, where the uncertainty includes an estimate of the systematic error…
The Mass of the Black Hole in the X-ray Binary Nova Muscae 1991
The optical counterpart of the black-hole soft X-ray transi e t Nova Muscae 1991 has brightened by ∆V ≈ 0.8 mag since its return to quiescence 23 years ago. We present th e first clear evidence that
NuSTAR and Swift observations of the extragalactic black hole X-ray binaries
We present the results obtained from detailed spectral and timing studies of extragalactic black hole X-ray binaries LMC X–1 and LMC X–3, using simultaneous observations with Nuclear Spectroscopic
The low-luminosity accretion disc wind of the black hole transient V4641 Sagittarii
We present an optical spectroscopic study of the black hole X-ray transient V4641 Sgr (=SAX J1819.3-2525) covering the 1999, 2002 and 2004 outbursts. The spectra were taken over 22 different epochs
Broadband X-ray analysis of 1E 1740.7−2942: constraints on spin, inclination, and a tentative black hole mass
1E 1740.7-2942 is one of the strongest hard X-ray emitters in the Galactic Centre region, believed to be a black hole in a high-mass X-ray binary system. Although extensively studied in X-rays, many
Chandra and XMM monitoring of the black hole X-ray binary IC 10 X-1
The massive black hole + Wolf-Rayet binary IC10 X-1 was observed in a series of 10 Chandra and 2 XMM-Newton observations spanning 2003-2012, showing consistent variability around 7 x10^37 erg/s, with
Dips and eclipses in the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6–0814 observed with NICER
We present the discovery of eclipses in the X-ray light curves of the X-ray binary Swift J1858.6–0814. From these, we find an orbital period of $P=76841.3_{-1.4}^{+1.3}$ s (≈21.3 h) and an eclipse
BlackCAT: A catalogue of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray transients
During the last ~50 years, the population of black hole candidates in X-ray binaries has increased considerably with 59 Galactic objects detected in transient low-mass X-ray binaries, plus a few in
The Origin of Black Hole Spin in Galactic Low-Mass X-ray Binaries
Galactic field black hole (BH) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are believed to form in situ via the evolution of isolated binaries. In the standard formation channel, these systems survived a common
X-Ray Binaries
This chapter discusses the implications of X-ray binaries on our knowledge of Type Ibc and Type II supernovae. X-ray binaries contain accreting neutron stars and stellar--mass black holes which are
Testing wind as an explanation for the spin problem in the continuum-fitting method
The continuum-fitting method is one of the two most advanced methods of determining the black hole spin in accreting X-ray binary systems. There are, however, still some unresolved issues with the

A NEW DYNAMICAL MODEL FOR THE BLACK HOLE BINARY LMC X-1
We present a dynamical model of the high mass X-ray binary LMC X-1 based on high-resolution optical spectroscopy and extensive optical and near-infrared photometry. From our new optical data we find
The Not-so-massive Black Hole in the Microquasar GRS1915+105
We present a new dynamical study of the black hole X-ray transient GRS1915+105 making use of near-infrared spectroscopy obtained with X-shooter at the Very Large Telescope. We detect a large number
XMM-Newton RGS spectroscopy of LMC X-3
We present soft X-ray spectroscopy of the black hole binary LMC X-3 from the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer. The observations span the full range of spectral states seen in LMC X-3. The
Spectroscopy of $A0620-00$: the mass of the black hole and an image of its accretion disc
We present spectra of the black hole binary A0620-00 taken at Hα and Hβ to study the distribution of emission-line flux from its accretion disc. Using the spectra of Hα, we have measured the K-type
THE MASS OF THE BLACK HOLE IN CYGNUS X-1
Cygnus X-1 is a binary star system that is comprised of a black hole and a massive giant companion star in a tight orbit. Building on our accurate distance measurement reported in the preceding
Discovery of a massive unseen star in LMC X-3
Spectroscopic observations of the optical counterpart of LMC X-3 show it to be a spectroscopic binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud with an orbital period of 1.70 days. The B3 main-sequence primary
The Optical Spectrum of HDE 226868=Cygnus X-1. II. Spectrophotometry and Mass Estimates
In part I of this series, Gies and Bolton (1982) have presented the results of radial velocity measures of 78 high-dispersion spectrograms of HDE 226868 = Cyg X-1. For the present study, 55 of the
The mass of the black hole in LMC X‐3
New high resolution, optical spectroscopy of the high mass X‐ray binary LMC X‐3, shows the spectral type of the donor star changes with phase due to irradiation by the X‐ray source. We find the
TESTING ACCRETION DISK STRUCTURE WITH SUZAKU DATA OF LMC X-3
The Suzaku observation of LMC X-3 gives the best data to date on the shape of the accretion disk spectrum. This is due to the combination of very low absorbing column density along this line of
THE CONSTANT INNER-DISK RADIUS OF LMC X-3: A BASIS FOR MEASURING BLACK HOLE SPIN
The black hole binary system LMC X-3 has been observed by virtually every X-ray mission since the inception of X-ray astronomy. Among the persistent sources, LMC X-3 is uniquely both habitually soft
